Gabi joined the United States Army as a Combat Medic at the age of 18. She attended Basic Training at Ft. Leonard Wood and completed her Advanced Initial Training at Ft. Sam Houston, TX. She served a total of 17 years in the Army. During her service, she deployed twice to Iraq and completed additional tours in Egypt and Kuwait.
In 2011, she was selected to become a Drill Sergeant, serving for three years—first at Ft. Jackson, SC, and then at Ft. Leonard Wood for an additional year and a half. Her initial injury occurred during a deployment when she sustained a ricochet wound from an IED explosion while on a convoy in Baghdad. She underwent several surgeries and made a full recovery within 2.5 years stateside. Later, while serving as a Drill Sergeant, she began experiencing paralysis symptoms in her legs. After going to the ER, she learned that tiny fragments of shrapnel were still embedded. She underwent three more surgeries, and complications from one of the procedures left her partially paralyzed in 2020.
During her recovery, she was introduced to wheelchair basketball and began exploring adaptive sports. She has competed in the Warrior Games (2022 and 2024), the Invictus Games (2022), and earned a spot on the national Wheelchair Rugby League team, competing in England at the most recent World Cup. This past winter, she learned to sit-ski and also began training in Para Bobsled. She competed in her first World Cup Championship this year, finishing 14th in the world.
